That's when I began to really appreciate NWA. I started with Pac, Cube, Snoop, and Dre. Much later, as I got older I looked back at some of the old school shit that my relatives and their friends were listening to. But by the time I was growing up, NWA had already split and so I don't remember anything about them as a crew. Still, growing up on West Coast rap, all you'd hear about was NWA and then later Death Row. When this came out, I wasn't even born yet and wouldn't be for another two years. Once again I can't speak in historical terms, but I'm under the impression that SOC pioneered West Coast gangsta rap. I'm also a huge fan of Express Yourself, Gangsta Gangsta, and of course Fuck da Police.ĭo you think it deserves the praise it getsġ00% yes. I can't speak in a historical context, but it has the perfect combination of production, lyricism, emotion, and politics that I feel hip-hop excels at. Straight Outta Compton in my opinion is one of the greatest hip-hop songs ever written. I love the classic hip-hop production techniques with the scratches and sampling, but with the aggression that wasn't found in other works of the same time. NWA was a sound that had a lot of punk/rock elements that I liked in rock, and the aggressive sound definitely helped when I was a angsty little teenager.Įvery song from Straight Outta Compton to Express Yourself was played on the daily for me. I remember being one of those, "I like all kinds of music except of rap and country" kind of guys, except that really meant I just listened to classic rock all day. This is actually the album that got me into hip-hop. !!!! DON'T FEEL BAD ABOUT BEING LATE !!!! Discussion throughout the week is encouraged. How has this album affected hip-hop? WHY do you like this tape? What are the best tracks? Do you think it deserves the praise it gets? Is it the first time you've listened to it? What's your first impression? Have you listened to the artist before? Explain why you like it or why you don't. It's fine for you to drop by just to say you love the album, but let's try and step it up a bit!!! This is your chance to practice being a critic.

Avoid vague statements of praise or criticism. This is an open thread for you to share your thoughts on the album. Despite being banned from many radio stations, the album went double platinum and cemented N.W.A's status as being extremely influential for gangsta and west-coast rap and pretty much just rap in general.įun Fact: Pretty much the entire album was written by either Ice Cube or MC Ren.įun Fact 2: 80% of the album sales were from the suburbs. Dre, Ice Cube, Eazy-E, MC Ren and DJ Yella).N.W.A was responsible for popularizing gangsta rap and starting the careers of hip-hop legends Dr. ( !/album/Straight+Outta+Compton/1085887)īackground/Description: Straight Outta Compton is the debut studio album by Compton, Los Angeles hip-hop group N.W.A.
